Catherine Childers is the Director of Outreach for the LA Department of Justice, Office of the Attorney General and has served in this capacity since July of 2005. Prior to her position at the Attorney General’s Office, Ms. Childers was employed by the LA Highway Safety Commission at its Alcohol Programs Liaison and by Mothers Against Drunk Driving as its State Executive Director.

Catherine Childers is best known in Louisiana for her legislative activities and public policy initiatives. She was instrumental in the passage of over forty pieces of legislation, including the minimum drinking age law, child endangerment, .08 legal limit of intoxication and the state constitutional amendment for victims’ rights. In recognition of her work to establish a nationwide legal blood alcohol limit of .08, Childers was invited to the White House in 2000 to join President Bill Clinton as he signed the federal .08 bill into law.

Prior to her involvement with MADD, Catherine Childers worked in the field of crime victim advocacy. She began her career in 1986 as a volunteer crisis counselor for the District Attorney’s Stop Rape Crisis Center in Baton Rouge. In 1988 she founded the Tri-Parish Rape Crisis Program within the 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Office and in 1990, the Tri-Parish Victims Assistance Program. In 1995, Childers organized the LA Coalition of State Victims’ Assistance Programs and in 1996, she co-founded the LA Victims Constitutional Amendment Network.

The U.S. Department of Justice recognized Catherine Childers in 1991 for her work in the field of victim advocacy and in 1995, she was asked to represent Louisiana on the public policy network of the National Victim Center. In 1998, the National Commission Against Drunk Driving formally commended Childers for her legislative efforts and public policy accomplishments. In 2001 Childers was inducted into the Citizens’ Hall of Fame, a permanent exhibit at the Louisiana State Museum of Government and Political Science.

Catherine Childers is a native of Baton Rouge and graduated from LSU with a degree in Psychology. She currently resides in Baton Rouge with her husband and children.
