History

The Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Criminal Justice (LCLE), the applicant agency, entered into a Cooperative Agreement with Department of Justice – Office for Victims of Crime (DOJ-OVC) to initiate a Louisiana State Victim Assistance Academy (LSVAA). LCLE subgranted the three (3) year project to Sheriff Sid Hebert of the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office, the designated implementing agency for the project.

A Memorandum of Understanding was initiated in May 2005 among the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office – Elderly Crime Victim Assistance Program, the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office, the Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the Louisiana Foundation Against Sexual Assault, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving. These agencies committed to form a partnership and provide support for the successful implementation of the first LSVAA.

The inaugural academy was held June 24-29, 2007 at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

"This Academy presented me with many challenges academically, but all were very good. I enjoyed getting to know the people I met. "Meeting people from other fields and learning about their positions and duties was helpful and the material was great."

"Thank you for the opportunity!"

"I thought this Academy was very well run. I had a great experience. It is obvious that a tremendous amount of work and preparation went into this."

"This was a statewide holistic view of victim services in the state of Louisiana - invaluable for collaboration and enhancement to services to victims."

"I would recommend the LSVAA to anyone who wants to assure that they will through collaboration with the many wonderful agencies who care, provide the victims they come into contact with the best possible services."

"I learned much from this experience and am looking forward to using this new knowledge when I return to my agency. I would recommend the Academy to anyone in victim assistance work."

"The Academy was very well organized and provided me with a wealth of knowledge to be able to better perform my job. I really enjoyed the diversity of the group of participants. I feel like I have a greater network of resources to help in my job duties. I am very excited and motivated to go back and better serve survivors of crime using the new tools I've obtained during the Academy."

"The Academy provides attendees with useful information that we can take with us in our careers. There is so much information that I learned about speaking with victims that I didn't know prior to attending the Academy and I will share the information I gathered with my co-workers."
